Beloved Female Musicians #1

In a music industry where female musicians (except for the big pop stars) tend to not get as much exposure/opportunities as their cis male counterparts it is, in my point of view, especially important to highlight and celebrate female artists. For that reason you will find a list in alphabetical order of 10  artists, I think every soul should know, below. Obviously, I admire more than just these 10 individuals but I find that particularly those ones have stayed with me for quite a while now, since I am enamoured with the sounds they create and how their art makes me feel.  Some artists make you listen profoundly, question and learn about music. Through their example they give confidence and I guess serve as role models for other (female) artists.

1. AGNES OBEL // Folk, Classical

When attending her concert in May 2017 at the Arena in Vienna, I was pretty content to see that her whole band consists of female musicians, as it is still such a rare thing to be a witness to.  Finding folk and classical patterns in her sound creations is something I really dig.

Track: “Dorian”

“They won’t know who we are
So we both can pretend”

How dreamy and soothing..

2. Anja Plaschg aka SOAP & SKIN // Wunderkind

Favourite female artist of Austria.

“Lead me
Teach me

Reach me
Release me

Awake me
In Italy”

3. BRITTANY HOWARD // Blues-rock, Alternative, Soul

She is the lead singer and guitarist of the Alabama Shakes and also plays in various other bands. Her soulful rock voice is just beyond amazing and she plays the guitar like a Queen.

Track: Over My Head

“I’m in over my head
I don’t think of you as bits and pieces
I think of you only
Like a miracle
Loving so deeply I feel it
through all my past lives
It feels good
I’m never saying goodbye
It feels good
I’m never saying goodbye”

I guess this is one of the most accurate songs which describes the beauty of falling in love. Watch and listen to four minutes of pure bliss. Omg.

4. ELENA TONRA // Post-Rock-Poetry

Elena’s the frontwoman of the band Daughter. Recently she also released a solo album called Ex:Re. The kind of music she writes makes you want to dance weirdly all day long and feel everything. I admire how she shows so much vulnerability through her lyrics. She takes it and creates gut wretchingly beautiful music out of it.

Track: Ex:Re – Romance

“I could begin to open up and risk desire
For I move slower and
Quieter than most
I grew up too quick and I still forgive too slow
Oh I wish there was another way

Romance is dead and done
And it hits between the eyes on this side
The grass is dead and barren
And it hurts between my thighs on this side”

5. Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor aka LORDE // Electro-Pop

It is said that David Bowie called Lorde “the future of pop music” and I see why:
Though she is successful in the mainstream scene she still stays true to herself and her art.

Track: The Louvre

“A rush at the beginning
I get caught up, just for a minute
But lover, you’re the one to blame, all that you’re doing
Can you hear the violence?
Megaphone to my chest
Broadcast the boom boom boom boom and make ’em all dance to it”

6. Mathangi „Maya“ Arulpragasam aka M.I.A. // Hip-Hop, Electro, Rap

Her music makes you speak up and take no shit no more.

Track: Borders

Guns blow doors to the system
Yeah fuck ’em when we say we’re not with them

We’re solid and we don’t need to kick them
This is North, South, East and Western
Guns blow doors to the system
Yeah fuck ’em when we say we’re not with them

We’re solid and we don’t need to kick them
This is North, South, East and Western”

My love for Reginas music’ is hard to put into words. Every album she releases is a masterpiece. I love the jumps she is able to make from her chest voice to her head voice seemingly without effort. When I first heard one of her more well-known-songs “Samson” back in 2008, I merely started to cry because of the shivers of felicity I got from the track. I love her music ever since.

Track: “The Party”

“For every road we can retrace
For every memory we can’t face
For every name that’s been erased
Let’s have another round
May I propose a little toast?
For all the ones who hurt the most
For all the friends that we have lost
Let’s give them one more round of applause”

8. ROSALÍA Vila Tobella // Artsy Flamenco

Her conceptual album “El Mal Querer”  is inspired by a 14th century novel called “Flamenca” and talks about toxic love and all the joy and pain that come along with it.  She finished her musical studies with that final project at Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña. Specially her confident presence on the scenery while showing her wide range of skills is so inspiring.

Track: Malamente

“Ese cristalito roto
Yo sentí cómo crujía
Antes de caerse al suelo
Ya sabía que se rompía”

9 + 10. the creative heads of PEROTÁ CHINGÓ // World, Magic
Dolores Aguirre & Julia Ortiz

When Dolores & Julia sing together they just form a certain vibrating kind of magic. You find naturness and authenticity within their music.

Track: Reverdecer

“Para avivar el fuego
No me falte el aire
Mi voz sea la herramienta
Cuando el trabajo sea reverdecer”

To be continued…
